Cold-climate heat pumps now work through a Calgary winter, but they need the right circuit, the right breaker, and enough panel capacity. What the electrical side of a heat pump install involves in 2026, what it costs, and how to avoid a surprise panel upgrade.
Do heat pumps actually work in Calgary winters?
Today's cold-climate heat pumps do. Units from Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, Bosch, and others are rated to keep producing heat down to minus 25 or minus 30, and their efficiency through a typical Calgary shoulder season (October to April, with plenty of chinook days) is excellent.
Most Calgary installs we wire are dual fuel: the heat pump handles heating and cooling for most of the year, and the existing gas furnace takes over during deep cold snaps. You get air conditioning in summer, lower gas use in fall and spring, and a proven backup when it hits minus 35. All-electric setups with electric backup heat are also common in new builds and need noticeably more panel capacity.
What electrical work does a heat pump need?
Every heat pump needs a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the outdoor unit's nameplate (usually 20A to 40A for a ducted residential system), a weatherproof disconnect within sight of the outdoor unit, and correctly sized copper wiring between the panel and the disconnect. Ductless mini splits also need a connection from the outdoor unit to each indoor head.
If the system includes an electric air handler or backup heat strips, that is a second large circuit, often 40A to 60A, and it is the part that most often pushes a 100A panel past its limit.
Will I need a panel upgrade for a heat pump?
Not always. Under the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code (in force across Alberta since April 1, 2025), your electrician performs a load calculation before adding a heat pump. Many Calgary homes with 200A service and gas heat have plenty of room. Homes on 100A service, especially ones that already have an EV charger, hot tub, or electric range, often do not.
Before you jump to a panel upgrade, ask about load management. Smart load controllers and energy management systems keep the heat pump, EV charger, and other big loads from all drawing full power at the same moment, and the code recognizes them when calculating demand. On the right home, that can save several thousand dollars over a full 100A to 200A service upgrade.
Do I need a permit to install a heat pump in Calgary?
Yes. The City of Calgary requires an electrical permit for a heat pump, and electrification upgrades like heat pumps, EV chargers, and air conditioners must be permitted by a qualified electrical contractor rather than by the homeowner. The HVAC side may need its own gas or mechanical permit if the furnace is being modified.
Ask your HVAC installer who is pulling the electrical permit. On a well-run job, the HVAC contractor sets the equipment and a licensed electrical contractor handles the panel, circuit, disconnect, permit, and inspection. We partner with HVAC installers across Calgary on exactly this.
What does the electrical side of a heat pump cost?
For a typical Calgary home with available panel space and the outdoor unit within a short run of the panel, the electrical portion of a heat pump install usually runs $900 to $2,000 including the breaker, wiring, disconnect, permit, and inspection. Longer runs, finished basements that need to be fished, or a second circuit for backup heat push that higher.
If a panel upgrade is needed, budget an additional $3,500 to $6,500. Doing the heat pump circuit and the panel upgrade in the same visit is cheaper than doing them a year apart.
Are there heat pump rebates in Alberta in 2026?
Fewer than there used to be. The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed, and Alberta does not currently offer a provincial heat pump rebate. The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program only applied to homes heating with oil, and its direct application stream for Alberta closed in July 2026.
What is still worth checking: the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP), which offers low-interest financing repaid through your property taxes in participating Alberta municipalities, plus manufacturer and HVAC dealer promotions. Programs change quickly, so we confirm what is current at the time of your quote.
Plan the heat pump, EV charger, and panel together
The most expensive way to electrify a home is one project at a time. If a heat pump is on your list for this year and an EV is on the list for next year, a single load calculation and plan now will tell you exactly what your panel can handle, where load management fits, and whether an upgrade makes sense once instead of twice.
